Meet the Doctors

 
GERARD A. MALANGA, MD

Dr. Malanga is the currently the Director of PM&R Sports Medicine Fellowship at Atlantic Sports Health Director and Pain Management at Overlook hospital. Previously he served as the Director of Sports, Spine and Orthopedic Rehabilitation at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. He is a Board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine specialist who has also completed a sports medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He has expertise in the nonoperative treatment of a variety of orthopedic disorders including neck and back pain as well as shoulder, knee, and other sport medicine and musculoskeletal problems. DR. Malanga provides sport medicine services to several local NJ high school and colleges and has served as the head team physician of New Jersey City University since 1999. He also serves as a consultant to the Rutger’s University Athletic Department as well. His practice has included the treatment of athletes from recreational to the Olympic and Professional levels.

Dr. Malanga has published a textbook entitle: “Whiplash” and “Scientific Evidence of Musculoskeletal Physical Examination. He has published over 60 articles and 25 book chapters regarding various musculoskeletal issues from in-line skating injuries to the treatment of neck and back pain. He has lectured throughout the country and abroad on a variety of sports medicine, spine, orthopedic and pain management topics. He has been a member of the Physiatric Association of Sports Spine and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR) board serving in many positions in the past including President. He is a member of the North American Spine Society and the American Pain Society previously serving as Chairman of the Public Education Committee of the North American Spine Society. He is currently a member of the AAPM&R Ultrasound task force. He has been chosen “Top Doctor” in the New York Metro Area; NJ Monthly Best Doctors in New Jersey, and Best Doctors in America since 2004.

Dr. Malanga is a Diplomate of the American College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine; and board certified in Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine.

Dr. Agesen grew up in Essex County. He lives in the town where he grew up in essex county with his wife and four children. Following his fellowship training in Sports Medicine, Electrodiagnostics and Epidural injection procedures, Dr. Agesen worked briefly as an attending at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, New Jersey. He then joined Associates in Rehabilitation Medicine for four years. Dr. Agesen then started New Jersey Sports Medicine, LLC with doctors Malanga and Bowen. His clinical interest includes sports medicine, electrodiagnostics and treatment of acute and chronic tendon, ligament and joint disorders. He also enjoys treating acute and chronic back conditions. Dr. Agesen was a starter for the Union Lancers Soccer Team, 2 time McGuire Cup National Champions in 1986 and 1987. He was a four year starter for the Penn State University Soccer team, an Adidas Athletic/Academic All-American, and was captain of the 1990-91 Penn State team. He, along with his partners, is the team physician for local high schools and universities. He enjoys treating competitive athletes and sports enthusiasts of all ages and levels.

Dr. Bowen grew up north of Buffalo in a small town and now resides in New Jersey with his wife and children. He is the Sports Medicine Fellowship Coordinator and a former attending at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. He is involved in clinical research and an active member of numerous national organizations. His clinical interests include regenerative treatments such as platelet rich plasma and prolotherapy, sports medicine, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, chronic tendon disorders, head and neck injuries in sports, shoulder biomechanics, nerve root dysfunction, electrodiagnosis (EMG/NCS), and medical education. He has authored several articles and book chapters. He has lectured locally and nationally and appeared on television and radio. He is also a consultant to insurance companies. He was recognized as one of the "Top Physicians" from 2003-05 and in 2009. He manages all aspects of pain and performs interventional procedures (ie epidural, facet, sacroiliac joint, etc.).
